JOHN RUSK (1772–1834)
70-page booklet with classic, calligraphy writing.Sufferings and Consolations is based on 2 Cor. 1:5; "For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounded by Christ."
John Rusks intention was spoken to the poor and needy —acquainted with heart-work— such as are sick of themselves—of sin— and of this world, and followers of the Lord Jesus Christ. His goal was to be a blessing to some of His family. Many requests from these people felt it should be published.
He is quoted to saying his thoughts were that if he, himself was needy and looking through old books, what a blessing it would be to find it. How glad that would make him if he was an instrument to some other poor soul. It's so like the mission that my husband Warren began so many years ago.
They were very scarce, so he endeavored to do a labor of love and publish writings.
You can find courage, in Sufferings and Consolation. Rusk wrote on this bible verse, "let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven" (Matt. 5:16). And to this; "Again, whatsoever your hand finds to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the grave, whither thou goest." (Eccl. 9:10).
John Rusk was not exalting himself but the Lord, whom he endeavored by his writings, to continue his work. Saying not many nobles are called, but God chose the foolish things of the world to confound the wise. This is part of the preface of the book. This way believers are drawn to Christ because it's while sick or troubled, He comes to you, you're walking with him.
This is a help through sickness and trials where walking in Jesus helps console you. With Him, as written in this book, you shall find all the strength to help you bear the future. Enabling you to endure the grief and loss, lay on the bosom of God and live for his Glory.
